After talking to a man at the gym last night and discovering he had been coming to the gym for the past two months and only knew how to work the treadmill. I asked him why was he even bothering will paying for a membership if all he was doing is walking you can do that outside or in your own home. Upon further discussion with the man I realized how little he knew about basic exercise guidelines and prescription. This really floored me because I never have considered the fact that some people would join a gym without really understanding what to do while they are at the gym. After much thought I realized what a fool I have been to assume people are just automatically born understanding the basic premises of exercise. This post is intended to direct people such as the man I spoke with last night to the right sources of information to allow one to begin there journey through health and fitness and on to a more healthy lifestyle. I recommend after joining a gym to pick up some very basic literature regarding exercise it doesn't really matter where you start just an easy read to begin your knowledge of fitness. One can also find great information on the web such as this websites and others a few are found on the additional information tab here and in addition to those check out coreperfomance.com, menshealth.com or womenshealth.com. But remember to be careful make sure the website you are using is ran and produced by a qualified professional or team of professionals this is usually easy to do as most websites have an about us tab. You can look at acsm.org for basic exercise guidelines as well. After reading up on basic exercise you now have kind of a grasp for the terminology and practice of exercise but this does not mean you are capable of creating your own program. The next step to achieving fitness enlightment would be to obtain a personal trainer at your gym to consult you and design a program to begin. Once this is down further study into healt and fitness will help further your knowledge and continued session with your trainer will help you understand more and more eventually you will be able to stand on your own in the gym. Like most things in life it just takes time so don't get frustrated or embarassed if you don't do or say the right thing learn and improve.
This blog is a little more broader than just health and fitness. Because today I just wanted to take a minute to explain my feelings toward a particular topic your outlook. So many of us live in a box that is only made up of our life and problems. Sometimes take a minute to change that outlook and put yourself in another person's shoes. Maybe you are having a rough day and just feel like you have to much to do, but when some comes and ask you for one more thing don't be the lesser being and snap at that person take a minute to think about there outlook maybe they are feeling the same way you are who knows maybe by helping them they could help you. I don't know I just want everyone to think about there actions and words just a little longer before playing them out.
The weekend was great. Got in some much needed work and finished most of it. I hope your weekend was just as pleasurable. Remember life is great and we need to take time to celebrate the joy in our lifes no matter how great or small. Ill talk more in-depth about a topic in a later blog today. Have a great monday
The most common thing I here individuals say when they aren't in a good mood is "I am just stressed". So let me take a minute to talk about this "stress". Our bodies cannot detect the difference between stressors meaning financial burdens, a long intense workout, or emotional trauma all of these are stressors. Our bodies have a specific stress threshold. Think of it like this your body is a bathtub and the stressors represent water being poured into this tub at some point if there is to much water poured into the tub it is going to overflow this is something we want to avoid at all possible. So wraping up with the point I am trying to make if you are experiencing a lot of stress in your life from work, your marriage, children, or whatever it may be try taking some time away from the gym so you can drain some of that water (stress) out of your tub (meaning taking time to relax to allow your body to recover) because all another workout is going to do is at more stress to your body. This a suggestion I have given to people from observing individuals and self experience. But I have also found some time the gym is the best place to release that stress. Either way the key is to listen to your body and try to do what will improve your overall health both physiological and psychological.
Got my first look at the kind of training I will be doing with my new mentor most of its a lot of functional exercises that emphasize core stability while increasing heart rate done in an interval or superset type manner. I like the overall approach but I am not a huge guy on focusing on core stability as my main focus yes it is key to developing other muscles and lifts that I would like to integrate into my own program. I also am not overly excited about the challenge of working with multiple people with different goals in the same session. To me personal training is centered around personalization. I would like to be able to on my own focus individually on each client on and their goals and tailor a program to achieve those goals while working very closely with that individual. I am a very organized person, so I have a very particular system I would like to use to make sure each of my clients feels very satisfied and well taken care on an in-depth level. I still am very excited to see the in and outs of a functional program and the effects it has on individuals as well as add it to my arsenal of tools to use in my own training methods. Like i said in an earlier post you must always be sorting through what works and throwing out what doesn't. I am very blessed to have a really cool awesome dude allowing me to learn and apply a new approach.
Get to start learning a new style of training from a very cool and awesome dude should be alot of fun and I will try to post any of the new techniques I learn on the training or nutrition pages so keep checking it out. Wish me luck
To many times in the health and fitness industry there is so much time spent debating and answer the question "what is the best exercise or workout method I can do". When the truth is there is not and will never be one best workout or exercise. The best approach comes from taking what works and throwing out what doesn't. To many times you here people talk about the principle of individuality. Yes this is a very important principle and should be given much thought to but only with in the already existing laws of human anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. There are certain basic principles of training that every method should involve and there are also certain basic actions that should never be involved in a training method. One must keep an open mind to all methods and sort through each one to determine which is applicable and practical. The best training method is the one that produces results for the given time allotted. So next time you here of a new training method don't degrade it because you believe what you are doing is the one and only way. Try this new method engage in it test and then conclude for yourself if it is worth adding to your arsenal of training or if its not worth the time. Rememeber open this field is ever evolving and adapting like you so you must continue to increase your knowledge and understanding.
Many people I talk to when asked about their future or career have little idea about what they are doing or what they want to to. One must have clear set and determined goals laid out in an organized fashion to accomplish a larger more all incompassing goal. This principle applies to every endeavor an individual engages in. Without a plan one is more suceptible to distractions and inefficiency. Applying this principle to health and fitness one must a plan when entering the gym a pre-determined, pre-constructed plan that will allow one to stay on track and progress. So next time your at the store invest in a notebook and a good pen. Set aside some time throughout each day to sit down and write out your workout for the following day. This progress will go along way in making your workouts more productive and efficient as well as allowing one to monitor progress more accuratell
